Eco-house in Barcelona

Surrounded by protected woodland, this two-storey family home on the outskirts of Barcelona was developed with an intensive research-led approach. The design was directed by a focus on sustainability in conception, use of material and method of construction.

Challenged with a steeply sloped site, and the necessity to maintain the core of the building, some of the site’s restrictions shaped the form of the home.

We responded with a custom-built timbre frame made off-site and assembled on-site that is sympathetic to, and consistent with, the natural surroundings. The colour palette was informed by the hue of the gravel and clay soil that has established a strong visual relationship with the context that inspired it.

The home is internally insulated with natural fibre and the walls finished in lime plaster. Cork insulation has been used externally and there is an outdoor system for collecting rainwater that irrigates the garden. This project is under construction and will be completed in summer 2023.

The garage is constructed from concrete and forms the platform for the unique construction. Aligned with the use of sustainable materials, in the garage a battery stores energy collected from the solar panels on the green roof.

Each space, led by the family’s desire to ensure the principles of Feng Shui, was designed with careful consideration given to internal proportion and orientation.
