House in Como

Built in the 1950s, and located in the centre of the Northern Italian town of Montesolaro, this house has been owned by the same family for three generations.

They have a deep connection to the home and we were tasked with reconfiguring its internal structure whilst acting within the constraints of the existing building.

The stone and brick perimeter walls and central spine, that are connected by slim steel beams, are left in tact. But to comply with the latest anti-seismic regulations, the low-vaulted masonry ceiling had to be reinforced with a grid of steel beams.

As the client’s family business is one of the leading furniture design company’s in the country, each room was individually designed to subtly frame their furniture, prototypes, and paintings. Objects that represent the shared history between the family and the company as well as the couples relationship with the art and design world.

Originally composed of three separate apartments, the intervention needed to achieve three aims simultaneously. First, divide the home into two separate apartments and connect the first two storeys. Second, maintain the independence of the top floor and its entrance. And third, sensitively preserve the historical features of the home while removing, replacing and securing structural elements.
