El Papiol House

Twenty minutes from Barcelona, this new build, two storey, villa was created for a family of three who enjoy hosting friends and family. The foundation of the design is based on the geometry of a rectangle that we have used as a fundamental unit from which to elaborate the elevations and volumes.

Organised around an internal closed courtyard, with a large skylight above, the building is a compact shape with a rear elevation constructed from columns that interrupts the linearity of the building. The columns, composed of compacted soil, serve a dual function, to allow the most amount of light in during winter and to shelter the terrace from the sun in summer.

On the lower ground floor is an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space with bedrooms branching off from it, all with generous ceiling heights. The ground floor spaces face the garden with large format windows that can be fully opened softening any threshold between inside and out. On the first floor are the children’s bedroom, a garage, amenities, and a multifunctional space which leads to an enclosed terrace.

With a spiral staircase connecting each floor there are two self-contained flats in the property that do not intrude into the main living spaces. Sustainable products have been used throughout the build that are both fire-resistant and efficiently absorb water, natural but high performing. The monolithic form of the home is juxtaposed by luminous, internal spaces creating uncluttered continuity throughout.
